The Soul
A being's spirit is divided into four layers, with the soul being at the centre.
The layers of a person's spirit can be visualised in a similar way to the Earth or the sun. We consist of a crust, a mantle, an outer core, and an inner core. Our crust is referred to as our outer energy, the mantle is the inner power, and the outer core is our essence which is like the bridge between our soul and inner power, with the soul being the inner core.
For a being to get more powerful, the basic principle is to work your way from the crust into the essence.
Outer Energy: The outer energy is the simplest and most common part of a person's soul. This is the basic energy that any being, human or otherwise, can access without any previous training or tutelage. In basic terms, it is a person's stamina.
Inner Power: The inner power is what makes up the bulk of a being's spirit, and is what holds all the potential for special abilities or unique techniques. It's produced regularly by a spirit's essence, and because essence is a residual layer of the soul it holds the signature print of that being's spirit. If, for whatever reason, someone loses their inner power, it will be slowly regenerated by their essence over a long period. Inner power can be placed in a person's spirit however, by a foreign source, so long as the new inner power is compatible to the essence. Most inner powers have a manifested sentience with their own individual name. A being's ability to communicate with their inner power's manifestation generally determines the depth of their mastery over their inner power.
Essence: The essence of a being is the the residual layer of that specific being's soul and is the birthplace of all energy in a being. It contains a specific signature which is unique to everyone and everything. Essences can be distinguished by a particular colour within a spectrum of red, yellow, green, blue, white or black. Black and white essences are the most rare, whilst the other four spectrums are the more common colours for an essence. The essence is the life-force of a being and the source of the inner power. Essence, unlike the inner power or outer energy, is finite, meaning that if all of the energy is used up, the being in question will die. Due to the fact that the essence is practically an extension of the soul, manipulators of their own essence can use it to replicate an aspect of themselves, meaning that if someone embedded their essence within someone else, the recipient's appearance and powers may start to mimic the donor's. Only the most skilled and powerful, such as gods and other ancient beings, are capable of manipulating their own essence.
Soul: At the very heart of every being is the soul. It is the nucleus of the spirit. If someone has control over another's soul, that person has control over everything the person under their control can do. Once the soul is created, however, it doesn't actually generate anything nor does it actively do much. Despite it not generating any energy, it works in much the same way that the brain does; it makes everything function within the spirit of a person. Unlike the essence or any abilities, the soul itself is transparent. It has no colour and, if not for the essence, it would be completely unnoticable. Much like a black hole, the soul cannot be seen unless there's light around it. When a being dies, it indicates that the soul has sustained too much damage and is unable to continue to function. Once the soul has sustained too much damage and stops functioning, that causes everything to shutdown, the essence, inner power and outer energy. At this point something from the underworld comes and fuels the soul with its own energy. This energy serves as a leash or chain that binds the soul to the being that came from whichever underworld. Once a soul is in an underworld, it cannot escape and the reason for this is simple; the soul uses the energy of the underworld to continue to function.
